Middlesbrough Milk Rollers returned home Northern champions this weekend, after skating into 1st place at the Great Yorkshire Showdown roller derby tournament.

On 28th of July the local roller derby team battled against other UK teams, in a knock-out style tournament. The all-day competition, held in Huddersfield, saw MMR compete against teams from Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield, Manchester and Halifax for a place in the final.

MMR smashed their opponents in the qualifying rounds, beating Leeds Whip-its 91 to 25 and Glasgow Iron Grrders 75 to 24 securing their position in the final showdown against Halifax’s Hot Wheels. The final bout was a close and furious display of skill and endurance, but MMR
came out on top stealing a win with just 9 points in it.

Co-captain Terri Sudron said:

‘We are elated, our team work on the day and hard work during training has paid off . This tournament has gained us a lot of respect and from the sound of the crowd, a lot of fans too! It’s onwards and upwards from here. I can’t wait to play again- we’ve got another bout in
Croydon and we’re going to keep progressing and keep winning’
